Purging Effect on Skin: Does It Mean the Skincare Product Is Working?

In the world of beauty, one common experience when trying new skincare products is the purging effect. Many people wonder if purging indicates that the product is truly effective or if it is just worsening their skin condition. This article will explore what purging is, why it happens, and whether it signifies that the skincare product you are using is actually working.

What Is Purging Effect?

Purging effect refers to a phenomenon where your skin experiences an increase in acne, blackheads, or irritation after starting a new skincare product. This often occurs because the product contains active ingredients that accelerate cell turnover or address pre-existing clogged pores. During the purging period, your skin may appear worse before it eventually shows positive results.

Why Does Purging Effect Happen?

  • Accelerated Cell Turnover: Products with active ingredients like retinoids, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid can speed up the skin’s cell turnover process. This can force old or clogged skin cells to surface faster, leading to new acne or blackheads.
  • Pore Cleansing: Products designed to clear clogged pores or address blackheads may cause “purging” as the blocked pores begin to be cleaned out. This can lead to an increase in acne before the skin is fully clear.
  • Skin Adjustment: Your skin may need time to adjust to new active ingredients. During this adjustment period, you might experience redness, irritation, or acne before your skin starts to respond positively.

Purging Process

  1. Application of Serum:
    • Applied to the surface of the skin. When Skineye serum is applied, it begins interacting with the skin’s surface and starts penetrating deeper layers.
  2. Active Ingredient Penetration:
    • Epidermis (specifically the stratum corneum) and into the follicle. Active ingredients in the serum, such as salicylic acid and tea tree oil, penetrate the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the epidermis) and reach the follicle openings.
  3. Exfoliation with Salicylic Acid:
    • Stratum corneum and follicle walls. Salicylic acid works within the stratum corneum to break down the bonds between dead skin cells and exfoliate the skin. It also penetrates the follicle walls in the dermis, helping to dissolve excess sebum and debris that contribute to pore blockages.
  4. Clearing Clogged Pores:
    • Follicles (in the dermis). By dissolving substances that block pores, salicylic acid helps clear follicle openings, allowing trapped dirt and sebum to be expelled to the surface.
  5. Antibacterial Action of Tea Tree Oil:
    • Epidermis, particularly active acne areas. Tea tree oil, with its antibacterial properties, targets acne-causing bacteria within the pores, reducing bacterial load and preventing further infection.
  6. Cleansing Phase:
    • Epidermis and dermis. During the cleansing phase, trapped dirt and debris are pushed to the surface. This may cause a temporary increase in acne as the serum expels underlying impurities.
  7. Healing and Clearing:
    • Epidermis and dermis. As the cleansing process continues, the skin starts to clear. Salicylic acid helps exfoliate remaining dead cells and sebum, while tea tree oil continues to combat bacterial infection. The skin gradually becomes clearer as the serum removes residual impurities.
  8. Final Improvement:
    • Epidermis and overall skin surface. After the cleansing phase, the skin appears smoother, cleaner, and more radiant. Both surface and deeper layers of the skin have been purified, resulting in fewer blemishes and overall improved skin condition.

Purging typically lasts between 2 to 4 weeks. This is because the skin needs time to complete its cell turnover cycle and clear out underlying issues. After that, new skin cells will form, and your skin will look cleaner and healthier in the long run.

How to Handle Purging

When purging occurs, do not stop using your skincare products. This is actually when exfoliation is happening, and your skin is going through a deep cleansing process. Continue using your serum or skincare products that contain AHA/BHA for the best results.
